Girls 6-a-Side National Football Championships

On Saturday 26 November, after their success at the Regional Championships the junior girls Team set off for The South Notts Academy in Radcliffe on Trent to represent Eastern Region at the National Competition.

The team was made up of our Captain LCpl Moseley from F Sqn, together with Cadets, Grice, Cunningham, Steward, Scott, and Hankins of  E Coy, Cadet Keightley from A Coy and our last minute reserve Cadet Cook from B Sqn

We were drawn  in the second pool with our first game against the North West. The girls found their feet and we got into our stride with a goalless draw. After the team devoured the tin of heroes I took (which were supposed to last all day!) we played our second match against the north East, winning convincingly 5-0, so the chocolates obviously worked! We went into our last pool game in good spirits and came away with a 1-0 win over London.

Winning the pool meant we were drawn against the South West in the semi finals. The game was very tight but we were very strong scoring in the second half. Sadly, to our and everybody else’s amazement the referee disallowed the goal! In the aftermath and confusion, the opposition managed to score against the run of play beating us 1-0.

Lt McIntyre asked the referee for an explanation after the game, and he said all of the ball had not crossed the line. The fact it hit o the back of the net before the goalie caught it and held it on the line is another thing...........

The girls did extremely well, and all have received their Regional Football Colours. The presentations were made by the honorary Colonel of Notts ACF, Colonel J Ludlam.

My thanks to Lt McIntyre and PI S Cook of B Sqn for assisting on the day. Thanks also to all of the cadets and the parents who assisted in getting them to the very early pick up points and to the Championships.

So - come on lads; the male 6- a- side football Regional Championships is on the 25th February at Colchester. If you pay football for your school or a local club contact your Area Aports Rep to join Team LNR.

Deputy Comdt (non mil)
