Land Command National Cadet Orienteering Championships 2011

Congratulations to our cadets who represented the County at this year’s Orienteering Championships held on Sunday 20 November at Warcop Training Camp in Cumbria.

This was the first time we entered the competition for many years - in fact the last time SMI Machin or myself could remember entering, was way back in the days when we were cadets, so entry was well overdue!!

Traveling up on the Saturday night with team manager SMI Machin & SI Denton the eight cadets from E Coy and A Coy were accommodated overnight at Warcop Camp.

Sunday dawned cold but sunny and our cadets joined 280 more from all points of the compass for the start of the race. Our Junior boys team finished 4th overall, but unfortunately our senior girls team failed to qualify in the team places as they failed to finish the course.

There were some great individual results though, with Cdt L/Cpl E Slann finishing second and Cdt Sgt E Cale finishing fifth in the Senior girls competition. Cdt S Colverson finished fourth in the junior boys competition.

Particular thanks to SMI Machin & SI Denton for their support over the weekend and to our Quartermaster, Capt Tony McLeavy for promoting orienteering within the County.

Next year we hope to enter all four classes, so if you have an interest in orienteering keep an eye on your notice board, or ask your Area sports rep for more information. We hope to hold an inter Detachment County competition next year, and select teams from this competition to represent the County and the Region in 2012.
