Army Cadet Force - Make Your Mark

Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership

The Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership will give you the chance to develop your organisation, motivation and communication skills, whilst also focusing on positive role models in sport, how to mentor others, and how to use leadership skills in a variety of settings.

You may have already gained the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership or this may be your first step onto the volunteering pathway. There is no requirement that any cadet wishing to embark on the Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership must have previously completed Level 1.

The skills that you learn on this course are completely transferable to your role in cadets. Sports Leaders will teach you how to instruct using a minimum amount of kit, instruct a wide age group and think on your feet. You do not need to be good at sports or as fit a Usain Bolt to pass this course. You do need a positive attitude, willingness to learn and above all be prepared to have a great time.

In order for you to pass Level 2, you need to be over 16 years old and have either completed 3 Star or be almost complete. There are two reasons for this:

Look at the chart below, and decide if there is any way we could complete all of the units over one weekend. As you have been in cadets, you have unknowingly completed a lot of the units. If you have attended a JCIC then you will have done the majority of unit 1 already!

When you attend the course, you will be required to register. By being over 16 years old, it is assumed that you have completed 3 Star and are therefore exempt from a lot of the training.

However, according the Sports Leaders UK, the minimum criteria are:

  1. Age: 14+ (please note, there is no upper age limit for this qualification)
  2. Guided learning hours: 48 hours (including 10 hours demonstration of leadership)
  3. Costs: A full list of prices can be found on the Fees & Charges Page.

The Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership consists of eight units of work including 10 hours demonstration of leadership:

Unit Unit Title Guided Learning Hours
1 Plan, lead and evaluate a sport/activity session 21 hours
3 Lead activities that promote a healthy lifestyle* 5 hours
4 Making activity sessions inclusive 4 hours
5 Positive role models in sport 3 hours
6 Organise and deliver a sports event or competition 4 hours
7 Pathways in sport and recreation 3 hours
8 Using leadership skills 5 hours

*This unit is taken from the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership. If learners have previously successfully completed this unit as part of the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership, they do not need to repeat it as part of this course and the course will be reduced to 43 guided learning hours.

Demonstration of Leadership

The Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership will take approximately 48 guided learning hours to deliver. This includes 10 hours during which learners will demonstrate their leadership. This demonstration of leadership makes up part of Unit 1 - Plan, lead and evaluate a sport/activity session.

If you are interested in gaining a nationally recognised award that can be used in a variety of ways then please see you Detachment Commander as soon as possible.

There will only be one course a year and places are limited. For more information, see your DC, click here for a poster and information on this year's course or twitter @LNRCadetAT
