Between 11 and 19 August this year more than 700 cadets from across Leicestershire¸Northamptonshire and Rutland travelled to Wretham Camp in Norfolk for one of the biggest cadet camps anywhere in the country. The week saw cadets from different Companies and Squadrons mixed together in star cadres at one and two star with a dedicated three star ‘Ranger’ cadre drawn from across the three counties.

In a generally poor summer, the weather stayed mostly fine, except for each evening’s sports session! This enabled the cadets to spend time working on their field craft, canoeing, mountain biking and of course improving their military and shooting skills in a huge variety of ways.

Annual camp is an opportunity for cadets to not only learn new skills but also to make new friends and having so many cadets in one place at one time gave everyone a unique opportunity to work with others from all over Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland.

Camp, the last for Colonel R S Hurwood, climaxed with an Open day attended by two Lord Lieutenants, a Deputy Lord Lieutenant, the County’s new Honorary Colonel and well over one hundred invited guests and dignitaries. In the final parade Colonel Hurwood took the salute on a parade of more than seven hundred cadets and well over one hundred officers and adult instructors.

In a moving final act Colonel was marched off camp to the cheers and applause of the cadets and adults.

The efficiency trophy was won by Alamein Company with Minden Company winning the best barrack inspection trophy and Talavera the drill competition.

To take so many away on camp was a tremendous feat. That the cadets had such a wonderful time bears testament to the hard work and dedication of so many of the county’s full time staff and adult volunteers.
