A Company Pre Camp Weekend May 2009

With Annual camp bearing down on us, A Company held their Pre Camp weekend with the aim of preparing their cadets for Annual Camp.

On Friday 29th May over 150 cadets from the Company moved to the Cadet Training Centre at Yardley Chase in Northampton. Once on the ground the cadets were walked through maintenance and presentation of a billet. This is a key skill as on annual camp the cadets will not only have to keep their billets clean but ensure that the room looks as uniform as possible if they are to take home the Best Billet Trophy.

As the warm summer sun set there was a real sense of excitement for the weekend ahead. The dawn chorus of the countryside was silenced by the voice of the instructors as they woke the cadets.

Once abluted and fed the the OC, Major Ian wALTON briefed the adults and cadets on annual camp which is being held this year at Castlemartin in Wales. The Company then prepared to move into the exercise phase of the weekend.
At Annual camp each Company carries out a 24hr exercise. Many of the cadets had not experienced a military exercise and running one on the pre-camp weekend allowed many to practice the skillsthey had learnt in their detachments and on other training weekends. Our Company’s luck held out - the fantastic weather allowed the instructors to stress the importance of taking on water and wearing sun cream especially when training in the field.
During the weekend we were visited by the County Commandant, Colonel Steve Davies, who is pictured left, speaking to some of the cadets and Adults
The exercise was a huge success with many cadets still grinning from ear to ear after the final assault.
Once the exercise was over the OC arranged a number of adventurous training stalls. These included the county’s climbing wall, mountain biking, archery, football and orientating. After talking to the cadets, it became clear that the general consensus was that this was one of the best weekends that A Company had held.

One cadet said he had never done so much in one weekend and had so much fun. The weekend really drummed up excitement for annual camp.... bring it on!
