Canoe Cadet Report by L/Cpl & Cdt Bailey

Lance Corporal Bailey and Cadet Bailey from Evington Detachment recently took part in the County’s Exercise Canoe Cadet 2007. Based at the cadet training centre at Yardley Chase the course runs every year during the school half term break and lasts for a week. The course offers certified training in both canoeing and kayaking and provides cadets with a challenging and enjoyable activities that can also be used towards their Duke of Edinburgh’s award qualification.

L/Cpl & Cdt Bailey tell us about their experiences: “ When we arrived at Yardley Chase the weather was good, but throughout the week it got so bad, that one of the days we could only go out in the canoes for half of it because it was so cold!

“On the Wednesday we all had a go at different things; if you were doing kayaking for the week, you would do that in the morning and canoeing in the afternoon.

We all went on the white water on Thursday and had to go through the water and hit obstacles on the way. We also went up the river Trent, which was a real challenge as the water was fast flowing - it was great fun though! Later that night we all went to the fair at Billing Aquadrome which was a great night out.

“The food for the week was good and our billets were nice and warm.

“Nobody wanted to go home on the last day because we enjoyed it so much. It was a really fun and exciting time and everyone made new friends.

“We would like to say a big thanks to the adult instructors.

I [Cdt Bailey] was proud to be presented with the ‘Outstanding Female’ trophy at the end of the week.”

Anyone interested in taking part in Canoe Cadet 2008 should speak to their Detachment Commander.
