3 Star Cadet ‘Ranger’ & Adult Training Weekend – May 2008

Exercise ‘Ranger’ is LNR ACF’s 3 Star Field Skills Assessment Cadre that is run three times a year and at annual camp by the County Training Wing and a selection of instructors from each Coy & Sqn in the county. The cadre is a demanding course designed to test cadets from across the county in their field craft, skill at arms, map & compass and leadership skills at APC Three Star Level.

Over the weekend a total of 24 cadets were put through their paces and battled the searing heat at Yardley Chase. The cadets were tested on a range of subjects allowing them to demonstrate their ability in the role of a section commander. Some of the key areas assessed included Patrol Commanders Orders, Ambushes, Harbour Drills, Night Navigation, Day Navigation, Route Cards, Re-Section, Skill At Arms Testing, concluding the exercise with Fire Team Tactics and Section Attacks.
The overall standard of the cadets on the weekend was excellent especially considering the hot weather and conditions they were working in. The results for the cadre were some of the best we have seen in the last few years with a very high overall pass rate and over 50 individual APC subject passes.
Back in camp, running along side the Ranger Cadre was a County First Aid Course and County Induction Cadre for new adult instructors. The cadets in the field were treated to a ‘guest’ enemy force on the Saturday night as some of the instructors from camp broke out of the class room to mount an enemy patrol, led by Sqn Sgt Major Lee Ellis, for the cadets to ambush.
In summary, the weekend was a great success and congratulations should be passed on to all the cadets who passed the cadre at such a high standard, they will now return to their companies and squadrons as the next tear of senior cadets to lead their junior peers at Annual Camp later this year.
Thanks also to the adult instructors and senior cadet DS who worked extremely hard over the weekend to complete and deliver a demanding testing programme.
