Two D Company Cadets Selected for Prestigious Canada Visit for the Second Time in Three years

Next year the Army Cadets will be celebrating their 150th birthday and although a year early what better way to celebrate than to go to Canada for 6 week’s training in the Rocky Mountains as guests of the Canadian Army Cadet Force.

Canada Cadet is an annual programme that selects approximately 40 cadets, from all over the United Kingdom, to train in the wilds of British Columbia.

For the second time in recent years two D Company cadets have been selected.

A couple of years ago we were awarded an unprecedented two places on this programme when Cadet Cpl Georgia Morton from Montagu Detachment, was selected along with Cadet Sergeant Androsiuk from Wellingborough Detachment. They spent a memorable summer on the course, surviving in real wild country. It was the trip of a lifetime and included trekking across the Rocky Mountains, living off the land, building a rope bridge to cross a deep gorge as well as travelling in canoes down river.

The Cadets mixed not just with Canadian Cadets but also with Army Cadets from a number of other different Countries, all working together as a team.

Canada Cadet is open to all Cadets meeting the age and fitness criteria - you have to be fit as there is no dropping out if you get tired in the middle of Canada! There are four courses, Argonaut, Whitehorse, Rocky Mountain & Connaught, each catering for a different age group and activity. All of them are free and the cadets only need to take their spending money. Entry is by application form and a short written essay, which should be interesting, provide information about the Cadet’s interests and include how they consider they would benefit from such a trip. As one may imagine, bids are plentiful and the Area Commanders must first select one Cadet per course from the initial applicants to go forward for further interview by the Commandant. After final selection by the Colonel one nomination for each of the courses is forwarded to Brigade level who then select the best applications from the whole of Eastern District. Selection is exhaustive and takes a long time during which the anticipation level of those Cadets lucky enough to have been nominated is very high.

We are delighted to have done the "double" again this year.

Cadet Corporal Charlotte Petersen-Buckley, from Latimer Detachment and Cadet Corporal Connor Aldrich from Wellingborough detachment are following in the footsteps of Cpl Morton and Sgt Androsiuk, having been selected for this year’s visit.

Both cadets are thrilled at their achievement and proud to be representing LNR ACF in Canada.

They are keen and ready for the off as they start to receive the specialist equipment and uniforms needed for their trip. We wish them both, and all the other lucky cadets that were chosen, the very best of luck on their "trip of a lifetime".
