D Coy NewsJCIC 16th -17th February 2008 16 Junior cadets took a big step towards becoming seniors at the weekend by attending the JCIC (Junior Cadet Instructors Course) at D Coy HQ located in Rothwell, Northants. The aim of the course is to introduce cadets to the methods of instruction. Being able to instruct is a basic skill of a senior cadet and by the time they become 4 star cadets they are generally proficient enough to complete the senior cadet instructor cadre to a skilled level. The best junior cadets from Wellingborough, Rushden, Latimer, Montagu and Rothwell detachments were represented on the course. Cadets started work at 08:00hrs each morning with tea and toast then it was a hard slog to dismissal at 18:00hrs. This becomes two very long and hard days for the candidates We have to say that the acting was to a very high standard especially when the enemy ran into the sentries. The highlight of the course for the instructors is the Teaching Practice lucky dip, all possible TPs are put into the hat and the candidates pull one out and that is the one they will present the following day........ the faces said it all. They have to work extremely hard as individuals planning prepping and practicing their TPs. As the end of the course came into sight there were some nervous looking young characters around, most totally engrossed in last minute stores checks and practices. Then there was no going back as in turn they delivered their lessons. JCIC is not a pass or fail course, however performance affects the route taken to achieve 4 star and promotion to the upper rank. At the end of the weekend all cadets were given individual appraisals. During these cadets were asked how they thought they had performed and were also given constructive feedback, with any areas for development highlighted. This is a course where it is demanded that cadets perform to their very best abilities and demonstrate maturity and nothing less is acceptable, it is not a course to come on if you don’t like criticism. By the end of the course all cadets could relax and it was now time to take their new skills away to practice and perfect at detachment and gain confidence and experience. So what do you need to attend this course?
