My Senior Cadet Instructors Course by Cdt LCpl Kramer
The latest Senior Cadet Instructors' Course (SCIC) was held at Beckingham Cadet Training Centre by 2 Cadet Training Team. It was attended by 39 ACF & CCF cadets who had travelled from all over England.
I was one of the lucky few to be allocated a place on the course and also one of a pair who had their 18th birthday whilst there - proof that I wasn't mad to choose to go on a course. It's always good to be woken up by cold water at 6am and then to have a muster parade at 8 - a great, but different and memorable way, to celebrate!!!!!
After arrival, I signed in and went straight on to do my Weapon Handling Test before the lessons and training session got underway. Saturday morning and the pace picked up even more for morning drill. The Instructors on this course are full time soldiers, so techniques on lesson training and field craft (e.g. how to pack your rucksack and webbing effectively) were bang on. On to our first test lesson, Skill At Arms; After a demo lesson by the instructor we were given toime to prep our own. I was given "Characteristics of the L98A2, Parts of the Weapon and NSP’s". and it was all to be fit into a 30-minute lesson. Note: 30mins goes very quickly when teaching.
After the SAA Lessons where finished we moved on to Map & Compass and the Night Navigation Exercise where I could show my knowledge with maps that I had gained through completed my Gold Duke Of Edinburgh. Unfortunately, on the Night Navigation my section did not win so I was a little disappointed, especailly as we ran/hastily walked most of the 4 -5 miles course.
Before I knew it, it was Tuesday morning, 5°C and I was shouting drill commands at the rest of my section. I'd never really taught drill back at detachment except a basic level, so I really enjoyed teaching and taking part in the lessons and perfecting the moves. Tthe exercise phase of the course gave us all a chance to show off what we knew about living in the field. We didn't stay out under a basha - it was more important that we had a good night sleep in the farmyard buildings so we could learn and teach the following day. However, we still had to take our turns at stagging throughout the night. On the 2nd day out on the training area we completed our section attacks, all taking leads at points before moving onto the final attack.
Friday soon arrived, and after the Passing Out Parade it was time to depart for home.
I had an amazing week and am very proud to say that I passed the course. I now wear the badge on my arm and am looking forward to doing the Master Cadet course in the New Year.
