I was lucky enough to be selected to attend the cadet cookery course earlier this year at Worthy Down, near Winchester. It is the tri-services catering training school for all military chefs; consequently the kitchens are equipped with really modern equipment and the instructors are excellent. We also had an opportunity to cook in field kitchens.
The course was brilliant fun and I learned a lot of new skills as well as getting the chance to meet new people. Each day we cooked a variety of dishes including lasagne, apple crumble, scones, swiss rolls, sausage rolls, bread and butter pudding and sponge cakes, plus a full English breakfast - and we got to eat everything we made!
In the evening various activities were put on for us and these included films, orienteering, command tasks and skinning and gutting a rabbit! Luckily we didn’t have to cook and eat the latter!
The course was run over 5 days and could take up to 24 students; unfortunately, only 18 of us turned up and most of these were from the CCF so the ACF was very under represented. Details of next year’s course is now out and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has an interest in cooking, so ask your detachment commander for details and get your bids in as soon as possible.
