Eight
cadets recently completed their bronze D of E expedition in Kata-Kanus.The
group started their expedition from just outside Oundle.
Whilst their practice expedition
was on one of the hottest weekends of the year so far, the weather
on day 1 of the actual was awful – cold and wet!Rucksacks
were wrapped in groundsheets to try and keep them dry.
They had a quick lunch stop in the rain at Fotheringhay.
Some of the portages were quite difficult and the cadets resorted
to ‘husky impersonations’ at one stage to drag the canoes
across the grass! They eventually arrived at Yarwell Mill campsite
about 6.00pm, very cold and wet. Luckily the site had nice hot showers.
On Sunday they woke up to brilliant sunshine, but it was very blustery,
and the wind kept changing direction, which made paddling very difficult
at times. One canoe decided to use one of their groundsheets as a
sail whenever possible.
This time a very pleasant lunch was had in the sun at Water Newton
before the group paddled and sailed to their final destination, which
was Ferry Meadows Country Park at Peterborough.
Here the canoes were emptied out before being loaded
back onto the trailer after a very successful first water based expedition
for E Company. Well done to those who took part.
