Melton Detachment - Section Competition 2010

Cold, wet and windy - perfect weather for a section competition! Saturday 16th January saw around 40 members of Melton Detachment competing in what is hopefully the first Section Competition. Six sections, each commanded by cadet NCOs, were ready for the briefing whilst standing in front of a large score board, confused by the strange names of the tasks.
The day was split into two phases; in phase one each section was driven to an unknown location 4 miles away from the cadet centre, given a map and route card with check points and a compass. They were given 5 minutes to plot the route and away they went.
Unknown to them, along the route 2 check points would be manned by Melton Adults with little tests to keep them focused. The first was an observation test and the second a feel and touch stand, which went down well. The cadets seems to reallly enjoy being blindfolded and asked to put their hands into tubs of cold beans, dog food, fish and other equally horrible selected items. All the sections completed the task in under two hours and after a quick lunch and a change of socks, phase 2 began
In this phase the sections completed a round robin of six stands; a casualty simulation by SSI Ward, a very realistic cycle accident, minefield clearance with grenade throwing (not live), command tasks and a night noise course in the Range. The latter conducted by Cpl Brown from the Defence Animal Centre in Melton, a regular soldier who gives up lots of his free time to assist the detachment.
Once everything had been packed away the final scores were announced. Everyone had put a great deal of effort into the competition and it was a close finish.
The winners, by two points, were Section one lead by Cdt Cpl Ben Sewell.

A great was day had by both the cadets and the instructors; it must have been good - the cadets are already asking " when’s the next one".

Detachment Commander
